Question: In the latest Lutheran Witness, Nov. 2008 , there is a quote from the article by Edith M. Sodowsky that states "I am glad God only calls usto give thanks "in" all circumstances, not "for them" Is this a correct interpretation of that scripture passage?

Answer form Pastor: When you read the final paragraph of Edith Sodowsky's article, you will note that she writes,"I sometimes joke that I am glad God only calls us to give thanks in all circumstances, not for them." She is writing with a "tongue-in-cheeK" manner because she does conclude with "but I can give thanks for God's provision - often through other Christians - in every circumstance." The Greek says, "in all you (plural) give thanks for this is god's will in Christ Jesus to you." God's will in Christ Jesus is that you thank him in everything.
