Our Beliefs

Mount Olive Lutheran holds to:
The Scriptures of the Old and the New Testaments as the written Word of God and the only rule and norm of faith and of practice.

All the Symbolical Books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church as a true and unadulterated statement and exposition of the Word of God, to wit: the three Ecumenical Creeds (the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Athanasian Creed), the Unaltered Augsburg Confession, the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles, the Large Catechism of Luther, the Small Catechism of Luther, and the Formula of Concord.

 Our Mission

Mount Olive Lutheran Church, a congregation of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, exists to provide opportunities for worshiping the Triune God, for growing in the Christian faith, for helping one another, for bringing others to know Christ, and for serving others in our vocations. (adopted May 2000)

Our Comminion Practice

Mount Olive communes, administers the Sacrament of the Altar, to the communicant members of Mount Olive Lutheran Church. Members of our sister congregations may also participate with us. It is best to notify the pastor before communing.

If a person is visiting and is not a communicant member, we request that you do not commune. If you are interested in communicant membership at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, please arrange a time to visit with the pastor.

Name: John C. Preus

Title: Vicar

Biography:

John Preus was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Rolf and Dorothy (Dort) Preus on September 21, 1982 four minutes before his twin brother Mark.  They were baptized on September  26, 1982, and confirmed on April 27, 1997 in Racine , Wisconsin.  John is the fourth oldest of eleven boys and one girl. (The second oldest was his brother David who was vicar here in 2005-06.)   His father Rolf is a Lutheran pastor who currently serves a parish of three congregations: two in NW Minnesota, and one in NE North Dakota.  His mother Dorothy was a stay-at-home mom, but now works as a substitute teacher in Mayville, North Dakota.

After graduating High School in 2001 in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, John enrolled at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota.  He graduated in 2006 with a major in History, but not before he met his wife Monica.  That summer they got engaged.  That Fall John began his studies at the Seminary in Fort Wayne.  That winter in January of 2007, John and Monica were married.  In February of 2008, their son James was born.  Monica is due to give birth to another baby in October.

After two years at Seminary, John decided to take advantage of a foreign exchange program offered through the Seminary.  So in September of 2008, John, Monica, and James moved to Oberursel, Germany for a ten-month stay.  During that time they learned the German language and culture.  They also enjoyed a little bit of travelling.  Though it proved to be a lot of work, the language study has really paid off as German resources have opened up for further study and possible translation work.

At home John and his siblings were taught Lutheran hymns.  At church he grew up hearing and singing the gospel.  Both his father and grandfather (Robert Preus) have expended much energy contending for and defending the pure Gospel which our Lord has given to His Church.  They have done this simply by holding fast to the Word of God which they were called to preach and teach.  It is this evangelical example of faithfulness to the Word of God and love for God’s people that has been John’s greatest encouragement to pursue his theological education in order to become a faithful pastor.

John and his family have settled in well here in Billings and he looks forward to a year of learning and serving at Mount Olive.
